The Laptop Guy
receives award recognizing charitable contributions to the community
Columbus, Ohio – The
Laptop Guy has been recognized by Business
First of Columbus with the Civic and Environmental Corporate Caring Award
for a small business, for its charitable contributions to animal control. Given
annually, the Corporate Caring Awards recognize organizations according to
their size in several categories, including Arts, Education, Environmental and
Civic, and Health and Human Services. Honorees have demonstrated sincere
dedication to making the central Ohio community a better place to live through
leadership, volunteering and philanthropic donations.
“We’re very passionate about animal
welfare, so it is a great honor to be recognized for our efforts,” said Todd
Feit, The Laptop Guy founder and CEO. One
element of The Laptop Guy’s support for animal welfare is to produce “Zoe’s
Friends,” a television segment on NBC4; which showcases dogs in need of
adoption at the Shelter. The inspiration for these segments is The Laptop Guy’s
“mascot,” Zoe, who was rescued from a dog shelter by Feit.
Each Zoe’s Friends requires Laptop Guy
associates to give their time to assist with script writing, production and
editing. “The Zoe’s Friends project is a favorite because it involves utilizing our
team’s creative skills in Web design and video editing,” said Feit. “It is gratifying
to see the professionalism of a Zoe’s Friends segment, knowing it was produced
by a team of people who normally repair laptops.”
Additional efforts to give
back to animals-in-need include volunteering at the Franklin County Dog Shelter
and adoption from shelters through marketing efforts. The Laptop Guy has also donated laptops and accessories to
the Cruelty Department of the Capital Area Humane Society and the Columbus Dog
Connection. And at last year’s WoofStock, a major fundraiser for
the Columbus Dog Connection, Feit and Zoe appeared as Masters of Ceremony.

The
Laptop Guy
It began eight years
ago with a guy and his dog repairing laptops at a rented counter in a toy
store. Today, The Laptop Guy retails, repairs and recycles thousands of laptops
from all over the country at its two locations in central Ohio. The organization
may have grown, but its philosophies and values remain the same. To learn more

The Laptop Guy’s
environmentally conscious business model lessens e-waste
Columbus, Ohio – Despite
the lack of any laws on the disposal of electronics in Ohio, The Laptop Guy,
which retails and repairs laptops, has chosen to implement a zero percent landfill
policy.
The EPA estimates that electronics waste amounts
to more than 1.5 million tons in landfills across the country. Because of this
statistic, The Laptop Guy’s Founder, Todd Feit, decided that instead of
allowing his organization to negatively affect the environment, he would create
an environmentally conscious business model.
“We
decided that we wouldn’t take a passive approach to the e-waste problem,” said
Feit. “When we receive a customer’s laptop, they are
strongly encouraged to consider repair over replacement. Repair is an
economical and environmentally sound solution for the majority of laptops we
receive, so we tell customers, ‘fix it - don’t pitch it.’”
If a customer opts not to repair, the
company will waive diagnostic fees in order to encourage the customer to
recycle the unit. The process of recycling laptops includes breaking them down
into individual parts that are sent to various partners of The Laptop Guy for
reuse, or environmentally sound disposal. And customers are assured that their hard drive will undergo a
Department of Defense wipe, erasing any remaining customer data.
Another initiative enforced by The Laptop
Guy is to recycle 100 percent of its paper and shipping materials waste. “Laptops
are sent to us from all over the country for repair, so we quickly accumulate large
amounts of shipping materials. We reuse as much as possible and offer excess shipping
materials to mail centers, free of charge.
Although there is no monetary benefit for
The Laptop Guy’s environmentally friendly efforts, Feit looks at the big picture. “In 2007 more than 9,000
pounds of e-waste was avoided, our paper recycling saved 18 trees and we kept
250 dumpsters worth of shipping materials out of landfills,” he said.
